When buying primary packaging for any product, quality assurance is paramount. At BlueSky, we utilise Acceptable Quality Level (AQL) standards to ensure every batch of bottles, jars, tubes, or caps meets your expectations. Our AQL process is designed to ensure consistency of product quality, giving our clients confidence in the packaging they receive and ensuring product safety and integrity.
What is AQL in Packaging?
AQL, or Acceptable Quality Level, represents the maximum number of defective units allowed in a production batch for it to be considered acceptable. Used extensively in quality control across manufacturing, AQL provides a benchmark, so buyers can ensure the quality level of their primary packaging materials—whether bottles, jars, caps, or pouches—meets expectations.
For example, an AQL level of 1.5% for major defects means that up to 1.5% of the items in the inspected sample batch can have major defects without the entire batch being rejected. The lower the AQL percentage, the higher the quality threshold.
Key Categories of AQL Defects
AQL categories divide potential defects into three types, each with its own acceptable threshold:
- Critical Defects: These are severe issues that may render the product unsafe for use or unusable. At BlueSky we set the acceptable level for critical defects at zero, as safety and functionality are paramount.
- Major Defects: These impact the appearance or usability of the packaging and could affect the end-user experience or functionality of the product.
- Minor Defects: These are less severe issues that don’t greatly impact usability or appearance but are still undesirable. The acceptable rate for minor defects is generally higher than major defects.
How is AQL Applied in Packaging Quality Control?
BlueSky review samples from production batches against these AQL standards. If the sample falls within the acceptable defect range, the batch is approved. Otherwise, we take corrective actions, which could include reworking, sorting, or further negotiations to ensure quality control. By applying these stringent AQLs across all packaging, BlueSky gives brand owners peace of mind and a consistent, high-quality supply chain.
For any brand owner, knowing that BlueSky upholds AQL standards across their product line means you can depend on us to maintain the quality and consistency that your brand deserves.
