Key Features of the Disc Top Range

One-Handed Dispensing — Invert and Squeeze

Disc tops are designed for one-handed operation: the user presses one side of the disc to open the closure, inverts the bottle and squeezes to dispense. This makes them well suited to products used in wet environments — showers, bathrooms, kitchens — where the bottle may be held in one hand while the product is dispensed with the other. The format is a practical, user-friendly choice for shampoos, conditioners, body washes, liquid soaps and similar low-to-medium viscosity personal care and home care products.

Four Neck Sizes — 20/410, 24/410, 24/415 and 28/410

The range spans four neck sizes covering the most common bottle formats across personal care and home care categories. Each neck size suits different bottle formats and volume ranges — see the neck size guidance section below.

Plain, Matt and Collar Finish Options

Finish options across the range include smooth plain caps, matt black and matt white, and gloss gold and gloss silver collar variants. Plain and smooth finishes suit everyday personal care and home care products; matt finishes suit premium or contemporary pack aesthetics; gold and silver collar options are relevant for brands where the disc top is a visible design element contributing to premium presentation.

Future Disc Top — PE Mono-Material, Lockable

The Future Disc Top is a 100% PE mono-material disc top closure with an integrated locking ring. Constructed from a single polymer throughout, it is suitable for kerbside recycling when paired with a PET or PE bottle — making it a directly recyclable alternative to a conventional multi-material disc top. The locking ring provides secure closure for e-commerce and transit applications. Available in 24/410 in white.

UK Stock Across Core SKUs

The majority of disc top SKUs are held in UK stock for fast dispatch. A number of 24/415 variants are available subject to minimum order quantities.

Scheduled Order Service

For brand owners and contract fillers who need consistent component supply across a production period, BlueSky offers a scheduled order service — allowing you to lock in forward volumes against UK-held stock. Compatible bottles can be included in the same supply arrangement.

What is a Disc Top Closure?

A disc top is a push-to-open dispensing closure that sits on the neck of a bottle and is operated by pressing one side of the flat disc on top of the cap, which levers the orifice open on the opposite side. The bottle is then inverted and squeezed to dispense the product. Releasing pressure closes the disc back down, resealing the orifice until the next use.

The disc top format is chosen when a product needs to be dispensed by inverting the bottle — which requires a closure that creates a reliable seal when the bottle is stored or transported upright but opens quickly and easily at the point of use. This is distinct from a lotion pump (which dispenses product without inverting the bottle) and a flip top (which also opens by pressing but typically relies on direct squeeze dispensing rather than inversion).

Disc top vs flip top — what is the difference?

Both are push-to-open closures but they differ in how product is dispensed. A disc top requires the bottle to be inverted before squeezing — the product flows by gravity and squeeze pressure through the orifice when the bottle is upside down. A flip top cap hinges open and can dispense product with the bottle upright or tilted, making it more suited to thicker products like gels, creams and pastes that don’t flow freely under inversion. Disc tops are more commonly used for lower-viscosity products; flip tops for higher-viscosity formulations.

What formulations work best with a disc top?

Disc tops work best with low-to-medium viscosity liquids that flow freely when the bottle is inverted — shampoos, conditioners, body washes, liquid soaps, shower gels, liquid hand soaps and similar personal care formulations. Thicker creams, gels or pastes that don’t flow readily under inversion are better suited to a flip top or pump closure.

What is the Future Disc Top?

The Future Disc Top is a 100% PE mono-material disc top — constructed entirely from polyethylene with no mixed-material components. It is suitable for kerbside recycling when paired with a PET or PE bottle, creating a fully recyclable pack. An integrated locking ring secures the closure for e-commerce and transit applications. It is the recyclable alternative within the disc top range for brands responding to EPR legislation or retailer recyclability requirements. Available in 24/410, white.

Choosing the Right Neck Size

20/410 — the smallest neck size in the disc top range, suited to smaller personal care bottles — 100–200ml formats where a compact closure is appropriate.

24/410 — the most widely stocked neck size in the range, covering the broadest combination of colours and finishes. Suited to standard personal care bottle formats across shampoo, conditioner, body wash and liquid soap in 200–500ml. The Future Disc Top, gold and silver collar options, and the widest colour range are all available in 24/410.

24/415 — the same 24mm diameter as 24/410 but with a different thread specification.

28/410 — suited to larger format bottles in body wash, liquid soap and home care categories, typically 500ml and above. Available in black. Less collar finish variety than 24/410 but the neck size is a direct match for larger personal care and home care bottle formats.

Where Disc Tops Are Used

Shampoo and Conditioner

Disc tops are one of the most common closure formats for shampoo and conditioner bottles. The invert-and-squeeze mechanism works well with the low-to-medium viscosity formulas typical of hair care products, and the one-handed operation suits in-shower use.

Body Wash and Shower Gel

Body wash and shower gel products in standard 250ml–500ml formats are frequently packaged with disc top closures. The format is practical for use in the shower and provides a secure seal between uses without requiring a separate cap.

Liquid Hand Soap

Disc tops are used for liquid hand soap in 250ml–500ml formats where a pump is not specified. The inversion format delivers a clean, controlled amount per use and keeps the closure sealed between uses.

Personal Care and Toiletries

Across personal care and toiletries more broadly — bubble bath, hair masks, intimate wash — disc tops provide a practical closure format for low-to-medium viscosity liquid products in personal care bottle formats.

Home Care

Disc tops are used on home care products including surface cleaners, bathroom products and multi-purpose liquids where the formulation viscosity and bottle format make the invert-and-squeeze format appropriate.

Contract Filling

For contract fillers, disc tops are among the most commonly specified closures across personal care and home care filling programmes. A broad neck size range, good colour choice and UK-held stock across core SKUs make BlueSky’s disc top range straightforward to work with across multiple client briefs.

FAQs

What is a disc top closure?

A disc top is a push-to-open dispensing closure operated by pressing one side of the disc to lever the orifice open. The bottle is then inverted and squeezed to dispense the product. It is suited to low-to-medium viscosity products — shampoos, conditioners, body washes, liquid soaps — that flow freely when the bottle is upside down.

What is the difference between a disc top and a flip top?

Both are push-to-open closures but they dispense differently. A disc top requires the bottle to be inverted to dispense product by gravity and squeeze pressure. A flip top hinges open and can dispense with the bottle upright, making it better suited to thicker products like gels, creams and pastes. Disc tops are more commonly used for liquid, free-flowing formulations.

What is the difference between a disc top and a lotion pump?

A lotion pump dispenses product without inverting the bottle, delivering a metered dose per stroke. A disc top requires inversion and squeeze to dispense, with no metered dose control — the user controls the amount dispensed by squeeze pressure. Lotion pumps suit products in upright bottles where inversion would be impractical; disc tops suit products in bottles designed to be used inverted.

What neck sizes are available?

BlueSky’s disc top range includes 20/410, 24/410, 24/415 and 28/410 neck sizes. 24/410 has the widest selection of colours and finishes and is the most commonly stocked.

What colours and finishes are available?

The range includes black, white and natural disc tops in plain smooth and matt finishes, and gloss gold and gloss silver collar options on selected 24/410 SKUs. Matt black and matt white suits contemporary and premium personal care aesthetics; collar finish options are suited to brands where the disc top is a visible design element. Other colours and customisation are possible, subject to MOQ.

What is the Future Disc Top?

The Future Disc Top is a 100% PE mono-material disc top closure — constructed entirely from polyethylene with no mixed components — making it suitable for kerbside recycling when paired with a PET or PE bottle. It includes an integrated locking ring for secure transit and e-commerce closure. Available in 24/410, white.

Are disc tops held in UK stock?

Core disc top SKUs — including the most commonly specified 24/410 and 28/410 combinations in black, white and natural — are held in UK stock for fast dispatch. Several 24/415 variants are available subject to minimum order quantities. Contact the team to confirm availability on specific combinations.

Can I set up a scheduled order service for disc tops?

Yes. BlueSky offers a scheduled order service for production buyers who need consistent forward supply, allowing you to lock in volumes in advance against UK-held stock. Contact the team to discuss your requirements.

Can BlueSky supply both disc tops and compatible bottles?

Yes. BlueSky supplies bottles in PET, HDPE and other materials across the neck sizes in the disc top range. Sourcing both closure and bottle through a single supplier removes compatibility risk and can be included in a scheduled supply arrangement.

What products are disc tops used for?

Disc tops are commonly used for shampoo, conditioner, body wash, shower gel, liquid hand soap, bubble bath and home care liquid products — wherever a one-handed, invert-and-squeeze dispensing format suits the product and bottle specification.
