The GL18 White Integrated Vertical Dropper (GL18W-IVD) is a precision dispensing insert manufactured in PP/PELD, designed to fit within the GL18 closure system used across BlueSky’s full range of glass dropper bottles. Unlike a rim dropper — which relies on a 45° bottle tilt and delivers variable drop sizes — the vertical dropper requires the bottle to be fully inverted to 180°, allowing drops to fall under gravity through a controlled drip tube geometry. This produces a significantly higher degree of dosing precision, with drop weight reproducibility of ±10% from the nominal target dose — making it the appropriate dispensing format for pharmaceutical oral drops, vitamin and mineral liquid supplements, tinctures, and other regulated or dose-sensitive liquid formulations where accurate, consistent dispensing is a clinical or commercial requirement.

The vertical dropper is an integrated accessory that fits within the GL18 cap, working in combination with BlueSky’s full range of GL18 closures — Basic Screw, OVII, OVIII, and CRC — across all bottle volumes from 5ml to 100ml. Four geometric variables in the dropper’s design govern its dispensing performance: drip tube diameter (which determines drop volume), drip hole dimensions (which control flow speed), air hole geometry (which manages speed and pressure), and air tube length (which affects pressure equalisation and flow speed). Drop rate is targeted at 60–120 drops per minute in line with European Pharmacopoeia monograph 0672, unless a specific drop speed is requested. For the correct dropper geometry to be specified for your formulation, please provide liquid viscosity, surface tension, density, and target dose weight to BlueSky’s team.

High-Precision Dosing — ±10% from Target Dose Weight

The vertical dropper delivers drop weight reproducibility of ±10% from the nominal target dose — a level of precision that makes it the standard dispensing format for pharmaceutical oral drops, vitamin formulations, and regulated liquid supplements. This precision is achieved through the bottle being fully inverted to 180°, with drops falling by gravity through a controlled drip tube geometry, rather than by manual squeezing or tilting as with other dispensing formats.

European Pharmacopoeia Compliant Drop Rate

The vertical dropper is designed to a target drop rate of 60–120 drops per minute, in line with European Pharmacopoeia monograph 0672 — the standard reference for oral drop dispensing in pharmaceutical applications. This makes the GL18W-IVD appropriate for OTC pharmaceutical preparations, licensed oral drop products, and nutraceutical formulations where demonstrated compliance with pharmacopoeial dosing standards is commercially or regulatorily required.

Four-Variable Geometry — Specifiable to Your Formulation

Drop rate and volume are governed by four geometric variables: drip tube diameter (controls drop volume), drip hole dimensions (controls flow speed), air hole geometry (controls speed and internal pressure), and air tube length (affects pressure equalisation and overall flow speed). To specify the correct dropper geometry for your liquid formulation, BlueSky requires the liquid’s viscosity, surface tension, density, and target dose weight. Where no drop speed is specified, the standard 60–120 drops per minute target is applied.

PP/PELD Construction — Broad Chemical Compatibility

Manufactured in PP (polypropylene) and PELD (low-density polyethylene), the GL18W-IVD offers broad chemical compatibility across a wide range of liquid formulations including aqueous solutions, alcohol-based preparations, vitamin formulations, tinctures, and oral drops. As with all dispensing accessories, compatibility testing with your specific formulation is recommended prior to production, particularly for formulations containing essential oils, high-concentration actives, or aggressive solvents.

Universal GL18 Compatibility — Works Across All Cap Types and Bottle Sizes

As part of the GL18 system, the integrated vertical dropper is compatible with all four GL18 cap shapes — Basic Screw, OVII (integral tamper-evident), OVIII (assembled tamper-evident), and CRC (child-resistant, ISO 8317) — and with all GL18 glass dropper bottle volumes from 5ml to 100ml. This means the dropper specification does not change when bottle size or closure type changes, provided the GL18 neck standard is consistent.

Vertical vs Rim — The Right Dropper for Precision Applications

The vertical dropper is specifically designed for applications where dosing precision matters — pharmaceutical oral drops, vitamin and mineral liquid supplements, tinctures, and paediatric dosing solutions. It is not suitable for general dispensing applications such as essential oils or cosmetic serums, where a rim dropper (which operates at 45° tilt with greater variability) is the more appropriate and cost-effective choice. Selecting the correct dropper type at the specification stage prevents costly reformulation or repackaging later.

Frequently Asked
Questions

What is the difference between a vertical dropper and a rim dropper?

A vertical dropper requires the bottle to be fully inverted to 180°, with drops falling by gravity through a controlled drip tube. This produces high dosing precision of ±10% from the target dose weight and is designed for pharmaceutical oral drops and regulated liquid supplements. A rim dropper operates at a 45° tilt, with greater variability in drop size, and is suitable for general dispensing applications such as essential oils, mouthwash, and cosmetic serums. Rim droppers are not appropriate where precise dosing is required.

What information is needed to specify the correct vertical dropper for my formulation?

To select the correct dropper geometry for your product, BlueSky requires four pieces of information: the liquid’s viscosity, surface tension, and density, and your target dose or drop weight. A safety data sheet for your formulation is also helpful for compatibility assessment. Where no specific drop speed is requested, the standard target of 60–120 drops per minute is applied.

Which GL18 caps and bottle sizes is this dropper compatible with?

The GL18W-IVD is compatible with all four GL18 cap shapes available from BlueSky — Basic Screw, OVII (integral tamper-evident ring), OVIII (assembled tamper-evident ring), and CRC (child-resistant, ISO 8317 certified). It fits all GL18 glass dropper bottle volumes in the BlueSky range: 5ml, 10ml, 15ml, 20ml, 30ml, 50ml, and 100ml, in both amber and clear glass. The GL18 neck standard is consistent across all these bottles, so the dropper specification does not change with bottle size.

Is this dropper suitable for pharmaceutical oral drop products?

Yes. The vertical dropper is the standard dispensing format for pharmaceutical oral drops, delivering ±10% dosing precision and a drop rate designed to meet European Pharmacopoeia monograph 0672. For licensed pharmaceutical applications, the appropriate cap type — typically OVII, OVIII, or CRC with tamper evidence — should be selected alongside the dropper. Please contact BlueSky’s team to discuss the full closure and accessory specification for your specific application and regulatory requirements.
