Orifice Sizes from 1.5mm to 6mm — Flow Rate Matched to Formulation
The range spans orifice sizes from 1.5mm through to 6mm — covering the full spectrum from controlled thin-liquid dispensing to free-flow thick gel and sauce applications. Selecting the correct orifice for the formulation is the most important specification decision for a flip top closure. See the orifice size guidance section below.
Seven Neck Sizes
With neck sizes across 18/415, 20/410, 20/415, 22/415, 24/410, 24/415 and 28/410, the range covers a broad variety of bottle formats used across personal care, food, home care and industrial applications. This breadth means a single supplier can cover multiple product lines and bottle specifications across a brand owner’s range or a contract filler’s client portfolio.
Smooth, Ribbed and Domed Cap Styles
Three cap surface styles are available. Smooth caps provide a clean, contemporary appearance suited to personal care, beauty and home care products. Ribbed caps give better grip during one-handed operation. Domed caps add a different profile suited to certain personal care formats.
Black, White, Natural and Orange
Colour options across the range cover the most commonly specified flip top colours. Natural PP — the uncoloured, semi-transparent polypropylene — allows some product visibility. Custom colours are possible, subject to MOQ – contact us for more information.
PP Construction — Wide Formulation Compatibility
All flip tops in the range are manufactured from polypropylene, providing good chemical compatibility across the personal care, food, home care and light industrial formulations typical of the range’s applications. PP is the standard material for flip top closures.
UK Stock on Core SKUs
Core flip top SKUs are held in UK stock for fast dispatch. A number of SKUs are available subject to minimum order quantities. A scheduled order service is available for production buyers who need consistent forward supply.
The orifice is the hole through which product is dispensed when the flip top is open. Its diameter directly determines how fast and how freely product flows — a smaller orifice gives controlled, slow flow suitable for thin liquids; a larger orifice gives faster, freer flow for thick gels and pastes. Specifying the wrong orifice for a formulation results in either dripping and mess (orifice too large) or frustrating, slow dispensing (orifice too small).
1.5mm orifice — very controlled flow for thin, low-viscosity liquids where minimal dose per squeeze is needed. Suited to thin liquid soaps, toners, or any product where the user needs precise, drop-by-drop or small-volume control.
2.4mm–2.8mm orifice — the most commonly specified range for everyday personal care thin-to-medium viscosity products. Suited to shampoos, conditioners, liquid hand soaps, light body lotions and similar formulations that flow freely but benefit from a defined pour rather than a free flow.
3mm orifice — suited to medium viscosity products including body wash, cream cleansers, sauces and dressings where a slightly larger orifice improves dispensing speed without losing control.
5.8mm–6mm orifice — large orifice for high-viscosity products that do not flow freely through a smaller opening. Suited to thick conditioners, hair masks, cream gels, tomato ketchup, thick sauces and pastes. The larger opening allows product to be squeezed out effectively without requiring excessive force.
A flip top closure is a one-piece cap with an integral hinge that allows the top to flip open for dispensing and snap shut for resealing, without removing the cap from the bottle. The user pushes the back of the cap to lever the top open, squeezes or pours the product through the orifice, then presses the front of the cap down to close.
The hinge mechanism means the cap stays attached to the bottle at all times — it cannot be lost or separated during use, which makes flip tops practical for personal care, food, home care and industrial products used frequently throughout the day.
What is the difference between a flip top and a screw cap?
A screw cap is removed entirely from the bottle to open it and replaced by twisting after use. A flip top remains attached and is opened and closed with a single press or snap action — no twisting, no separate cap to manage. Flip tops are preferred for products used frequently and in wet or messy environments (showers, kitchens) where removing a cap is impractical. Screw caps are more common where a secure, airtight seal is the primary requirement.
What is the difference between a flip top and a disc top?
Both are push-to-open closures but they dispense differently. A disc top requires the bottle to be inverted — the orifice is at the top when the disc is pressed, and product flows by gravity and squeeze when the bottle is upside down. A flip top dispenses with the bottle upright or tilted, which makes it better suited to thicker products that do not flow freely under inversion alone. Disc tops suit low-viscosity liquids; flip tops suit the full viscosity range from thin liquids to thick gels depending on orifice size.
What products are flip tops used for?
Flip tops are one of the most widely used closure formats in packaging, across multiple industries:
The orifice size selected should match the viscosity of the product in each category.
18/415 — suits smaller bottles for personal care, home care, and healthcare applications.
20/410 — a widely used personal care neck finish. Suits shampoo, conditioner and personal care bottles in the 100–300ml range.
20/415 — similar diameter to 20/410 but different thread.
22/415 — a less common neck finish; one SKU available to suit a specific BlueSky bottle (ES60WH2).
24/410 — one of the most widely stocked neck finishes across the BlueSky bottle range; natural domed and white smooth variants stocked. Suits a broad range of personal care and home care bottle formats.
24/415 — similar diameter to 24/410 with different thread; available with 3mm orifice.
28/410 — suits larger format bottles; natural (6mm). Suited to larger body care, home care and food product bottles.
Personal Care
Shampoo, conditioner, body wash, liquid soap and hair treatment products are among the most common applications. The 20/410 and 24/410 neck sizes with 2.5mm–3mm orifices are the most frequently specified combination for standard personal care bottle formats.
Hair Care
Hair masks, thick conditioners and treatment formulations with higher viscosity benefit from the 28/410 format with a 5.8mm–6mm orifice, which allows product to be squeezed out effectively without excessive force.
Food and Sauce
Flip tops are standard closures for sauces, ketchup, mayonnaise, dressings and condiments. The 28/410 neck size with 5.8mm–6mm orifice suits the larger bottles typical in food service and retail sauce packaging. The one-handed open-and-close format is practical in kitchen environments.
Home Care
Cream cleansers, bathroom cleaning products and surface liquids use flip tops where the bottle will be used frequently and a simple, resealable closure is required. Medium orifice sizes (3mm) suit cream cleaner viscosities.
Healthcare and Pharmaceutical
Topical liquids, antiseptic solutions and wound care products in smaller bottle formats use flip tops with smaller orifices (1.5mm–2.4mm) for controlled, targeted dispensing.
Contract Filling
The range covers the most common neck sizes and orifice combinations encountered across personal care, food and home care filling programmes. UK-held stock and scheduled ordering support production planning across multiple client briefs.

We’ve prepared a range brochure that includes details of all the Flip Top Closures from BlueSky.
A flip top closure is a one-piece cap with an integral hinge that allows the top to flip open for dispensing and snap shut to reseal, without removing the cap from the bottle. It is opened and closed with a single push or snap action, making it practical for products used frequently and in environments where removing a cap is impractical.
The orifice is the opening through which product is dispensed when the flip top is open. Its diameter determines flow rate — a smaller orifice gives slow, controlled flow for thin liquids; a larger orifice allows faster flow for thick gels and pastes. Specifying the wrong orifice results in either dripping or slow, difficult dispensing. The orifice should be matched to the viscosity of the product. See the orifice size guidance section above for a full breakdown.
Orifice sizes across the BlueSky flip top range include 1.5mm, 2.4mm, 2.5mm, 2.7mm, 2.8mm, 3mm, 5.8mm and 6mm. The right size depends on the viscosity of the product being dispensed.
The range includes 18/415, 20/410, 20/415, 22/415, 24/410, 24/415 and 28/410 neck sizes. See the neck size guidance section for application notes on each.
A screw cap is fully removed by twisting and replaced after use. A flip top stays attached to the bottle and is opened and closed with a single press or snap. Flip tops are preferred where one-handed operation and frequent use are required; screw caps where a more secure airtight seal is the priority.
A disc top requires the bottle to be inverted to dispense product by gravity and squeeze. A flip top dispenses with the bottle upright or tilted, making it better suited to thicker products. Disc tops suit low-viscosity liquids; flip tops suit a wider viscosity range. See the disc tops page for more detail.
Smooth caps have a flat surface and clean appearance suited to personal care and home care products. Ribbed caps have raised grip lines for easier one-handed opening. Domed caps have a curved profile that gives a different aesthetic suited to certain personal care formats.
