Did you know your PET products could be at risk from heat distortion?

Tips to maintain the safety & quality of PET products

PET is unique in that it is virtually shatterproof, has an extremely high strength to weight ratio and has excellent chemical resistance to organic material and water.

It is easy to handle and transport, however, some are unaware of its susceptibility to heat distortion and shrinkage when in storage. The amount of shrinkage will depend upon the actual temperature, the length of time and the specific characteristics of any given container. Some general indications are shown below:

  • Over 50°C – shrinkage occurs in less than 1 hour.
  • 42-50°C – shrinkage in less than 12 hours.
  • 35-42°C – shrinkage in less than 5 days.
  • 30-35°C – shrinkage in less than 20 days.

Our quick guide will help you to maintain the safety and quality of your PET products:

  • If shipping via container, seek advice from the shipper.
  • Carriers should deliver loads directly and avoid unnecessary delays.
  • Light coloured vehicles or ventilated trailers (without windows or panels) are preferred.
  • Pallets with PET products (empty or full) should not be stored on trailers at any time of the year.
  • Pallets should be unloaded as soon as possible.
  • Avoid leaving pallets in direct sunlight during load/unloading.
  • Place pallets into storage away from skylights and heat sources.
  • Storage under metal roofs with limited airspace is not recommended.
  • Avoid storing bottles at temperatures in excess of 35°C.
  • Keep products away from external heating sources e.g., motor exhaust, warehouse heaters etc.
  • Follow good manufacturing practice for stock rotation.
